Americana music a coming together of blues\, roots\, folk and country. \nCarlene Thissen\, Karen Cohen\, Carolyn Stanley \nCarlene Thissen is a singer/songwriter from Naples\, Florida\, where she performs at various interesting venues\, including a recent Cattle Drive in Immokalee\, Florida. Her voice is reminiscent of Joan Baez and Bonnie Raitt\, depending on what she’s singing\, and her songs range from ballads to boot-stomping country rock. Carlene’s songs are frequently featured on Women Of Substance Radio. \nCarolyn Stanley is usually heard in Fort Myers backing up singer songwriters Mary Dahl or David Stanley\, singing harmony and playing guitar\, banjo or charango. Tonight she will be taking center stage\, singing and picking some roots music county blues and a couple originals by singer song writers she knows. Carolyn began singing as a child. Her family always sang on long trips in the car with songs of the Weavers being some of their favorites. She feels blessed to have inherited her father’s talent to pick out harmony parts easily. As a teenager she began learning to finger pick the guitar from her older brother who was playing Mississippi John Hurt and Dave Van Ronk tunes. Later she and her husband\, David Stanley\, joined Peach’s Little Band and Big Build Dup and the Letdowns playing eclectic acoustic music. Her interest in folk music has expanded over the years to include playing old time clawhammer style banjo\, singing songs of her favorite singer song writers and most recently leading the singing at a weekly ukulele jam.

SUMMARY:Mean Mary in concert. Pete & Silvia Popravak opens
DESCRIPTION:Mary plays 11 instruments and has recorded 16 albums\, her newest being Cold.\nwww.meanmary.com \nGypsy Girl:\nMary James\, youngest of six children\, was born in Geneva\, Alabama\, though her family lived in Florida\, a couple miles below the Alabama line. Her mom (author\, Jean James) and dad (WWII veteran\, William James) lived a very nomadic lifestyle. On one occasion they packed up the family (Mary was four at the time) and moved from Florida to North Minnesota\, near the Canadian border\, to rough it in the wilds. \nThe North Country: \nFor three months they lived in a tent built from a roll of Visqueen they’d brought with them. During this time\, they built a log cabin using only an axe\, hand saws\, and the trees around them. They cooked their food on a campfire\, got their water from a deep hole they’d dug\, and read at night by the northern lights shining through the clear walls of their plastic tent. On one occasion their tent was mauled by a large\, 7’1” black bear that Mary’s mom\, Jean\, was forced to shoot. \nThe tent soon became unbearably cold\, and when they finally moved into their almost completed log cabin\, winter was upon them. Without electricity or running water\, and cold enough to freeze water five feet from the only source of heat (an old wood stove)\, the family spent many hours reading books by kerosene lamp and enjoying the great outdoors (cutting firewood!). \nFirst Guitar: \nMary’s oldest brother\, Jim\, who’d just joined the Navy\, sent the family a guitar and a compilation tape of songs he liked. With a battery-powered tape-player\, the family listened to the music of Hank Williams\, Jr. and Dolly Parton. It wasn’t long before Mary was singing the songs plus vocalizing all the instrumentation. Seeing her talent\, Mom and Dad bought guitar books\, and Mom started teaching all the children to play the guitar. Mary and her brother Frank were the two who would turn music into a career. \nMary learned to read music before she could read words and was an official singer/songwriter before she’d started her first day of kindergarten. With the help of her mom\, she wrote her theme song “Mean Mary from Alabam’.” The press immediately baptized her with this handle\, and she’s been Mean Mary ever since. \nGoodness\, Snakes Alive: \nThe James family eventually migrated back to Florida. Mary’s dad (who was sixty when she was born) was now retired\, and Mary’s mom searched for ways to help support the family as well as feed Mary’s musical appetite and the varied interests of their other children. She started an organic truck farm\, built and sold live-animal traps\, collected live reptiles\, amphibians\, and mammals for wholesale distributors\, and collected live venomous snakes for antivenom production. The children joined in all these undertakings and found it great sport. \nOn the Road Again: \nMary was now playing guitar\, banjo and fiddle. She recorded her first album at age six\, and spent five hours a day on instrumental and vocal practice along with her live performances. When she upped her music study time to seven hours a day\, and her road shows began to multiply\, it became impossible for her to attend school. At the end of the second grade\, she went into home study and also started appearing daily on the Country Boy Eddie Show\, a regional TV program out of Birmingham\, Alabama. During this time\, she also appeared regularly in Nashville\, Tennessee at the Nashville Palace\, on the Nashville Network\, the Elvis Presley Museum\, and on Printer’s Alley. \nIn spite of her hectic schedule\, she found time for her studies and when only nine years old she aced a state required test at a 12th grade equivalency level. This wasn’t surprising to her parents who had witnessed her read the entire Gone with the Wind novel at age seven. \nHer guitarist brother\, Frank James\, who’d now joined her on stage and in the home school program\, also excelled in his studies and at age fourteen taught himself trigonometry. He graduated from high school at fifteen. \nBack in Time: \nAt one point\, Mary and Frank were booked at a living history event. They immediately fell in love with folk music. They’d grown weary of the commercial\, country-music scene and so started a tour of historic folk and Civil War era music. It wasn’t long before they were one of the most sought after historical folk groups in the country\, being booked every weekend and having to turn down hundreds of shows a year. \nThere was only one problem with this new arena of music to Mary’s fourteen-year-old eyes: all those mounted reenactors riding around while she stood in the dust and played music. Mary had always wanted a horse\, and being a wise teenager she slyly told her parents that the only reason she’d worked so hard on music was so she could one day afford one! When her brother\, Frank\, who was equally drawn by equestrian interests\, seconded her resolve\, Mom and Dad gave in. \nHorsing Around: \nAlways creative with new ideas to make money for her kids’ dreams\, Mom started selling fudge at their live shows. The revenues from this enterprise almost too quickly materialized into horse flesh: an Arabian mix which Frank named Rogue\, and a green-broke Thoroughbred mix which Mary named Apache. They promptly added “horse-back music” to their overflowing repertoire and began playing “mounted” music whenever they could book it. This led them from parades to wild-west shows and even a few bank robberies (re-enacted\, of course). \nApache was a spirited horse and contstantly got into trouble. He loved to perform\, but that didn’t stop his proclivity for accidents. He once reared in a parade and fell over backwards on Mary and her guitar. Another time\, when spooked by a deer\, he bolted\, his saddle broke\, Mary fell underneath\, and was trampled by his running hooves. He also\, at times\, liked to roll down hills with Mary astride. But in spite of broken bones\, swollen limbs\, twisted legs\, and multiple bruises\, Mary never missed a show\, though she did on occasion have to prop herself against a support. \nCalifornia\, Here They Come: \nIn the meantime\, Mary and Frank were eliciting interest from a California music agency\, and Mom James had just signed a contract with a California literary agency. The other children were all grown and on their own by this time\, so Mom\, Dad\, Frank\, and Mary did the “Beverly Hillbilly” thing. They packed all their belongings into\, and onto\, their vehicles\, hooked up the horse trailer with Rogue and Apache\, and drove to LA. \nFor the next three years\, Mary and Frank were involved in almost every TV show and movie produced in the Hollywood area – be it as background actor\, stand-in\, photo double\, stunt double\, or day player. Mary found a large\, beat-up\, slide-in camper for the back of her pickup truck that cost only two hundred dollars\, and that became her home. She parked it wherever it was convenient\, and sometimes in places not so convenient. There are no doubt still dents on low-hanging limbs all over the LA area\, thanks to Mary and her top-heavy home. And then there was the time she took the mirror off a movie executive’s car at Fox studios by trying to squeeze through an impossibly-narrow area. She bought him a new mirror but never got a movie roll out of the happening! \nIt was exciting\, interesting work but it wasn’t furthering her music career\, and the horses didn’t like it at all. They longed for the green fields they were used to. Eventually the James Gang migrated back to the South\, finding homes in Tennessee. \nThe Great Setback: \nThe horses were happy\, and Mary’s music career was really taking off\, when the most devastating happening of her life occurred. One rainy evening in February she was the front-seat passenger in a small car when the driver lost control\, Mary’s head broke the windshield and her neck cracked the hard plastic dashboard. The twisted state of her neck convinced the driver she was gone. He even called her parents and told them she was dead. But a high-speed ambulance ride and quick medical attention at the hospital saved her life – if not her future. It was there she received news that\, to her\, was worse than death – her right vocal cord was paralyzed. \nShe brought her battered body home from the hospital and began her fight. Music was her life – had always been her life – and she couldn’t give it up. She purposely set herself to do the hardest of physical tasks\, demanding her body to get well. She stacked hay bales\, built fences and barns\, took winter swims\, and constantly worked her vocal cords. The rest of her body soon recovered from the trauma\, but her right vocal cord stayed paralyzed. The left side tried to compensate for it\, making it possible for her to sing a little\, but only for about ten minutes at a time\, and her voice was dead next to its former capabilities. \nA Bit of Light in the Darkness:   \nOne joyous day\, six months later\, a throat specialist told her there was slight movement in her frozen vocal cord. He said it might not totally recover\, might not even improve further\, but his news was enough for Mary. That was when her real work began. She booked shows\, sang when she could\, and when she couldn’t\, she would play her instruments. \n  \nShe started touring again\, sometimes alone\, sometimes with her brother\, and sometimes with her full band. She wrote and co-wrote books. (Her novel\, Wherefore Art Thou\, Jane?\, won first place in the Reader’s Favorite International Awards.)  Her International fan base took a giant leap in growth. This was all good news\, but the greatest thing that happened during this time was the recovery of her vocal cord. She had worked it back to life! \n  \nOn the Never-Ending Street: \n  \nToday she produces music\, produces videos (her YouTube videos have received over 15 million visits)\, tours extensively across the US and overseas\, is co-writing a novel trilogy about the music world\, and is an endorsing artist for Deering Banjos. The Deerings have named her their Goodtime Ambassador. Mary plays 11 instruments and has recorded 16 albums\, her newest being Cold. There is not room here to tell the whole life story of Mean Mary\, but if you would like to hear more of it\, listen to her music—it is all there.

The show will finish with a fabulous Lovers Key Sunset.\nPark entry fees are $8.00 for vehicles (2-8 people)\, $4 for single person in vehicle \nThe Pearl Street Band\, comprised of Bob Williams\, Mike McMillan\, Bill Veach and Clark Johnson\, perform regularly on Fort Myers Beach. Bob\, Mike\, and Bill are all songwriters. The band plays a mix of originals and songs from other artists that inspire them. You will enjoy listening to them as much as they will be enjoying performing for you.\n\nIn the late sixties\, Bob Williams\, a young guitar player from Long Island\, NY\, began writing his own music. Pulling elements from Folk-Rock and Country-Rock\, Bob created a sound all of his own. Always eager to share amusing stories behind the lyrics\, Bob’s songs are personal\, irreverent\, funny\, and sad\, and most importantly\, true to his heart. With encouragement from family and friends\, he produced and released his first CD\,  No Apologies“\, in 2015. In 2018 he released his second Album\, “Ain’t Sorry Yet“\, and has a third in progress.\n\n\nMike McMillan started playing guitar at age 13. He enjoys many different genres which have influenced his original compositions. He calls himself a student of the Blues.\n\n\nBill Veach was a drummer in a rock band in college\, but guitars are easier to move and make for better neighbors\, so he spent $100 of his beer money on a flame red acoustic guitar. Moving was a part of his life\, with a love of travel that is expressed in many of his songs. His songs are often autobiographical about his experiences\, travel\, love\, loss and some characters he has met on his journey. Bill is a Western boy\, raised in Colorado and lived in Utah and Wyoming before becoming a full time resident of Fort Myers Beach. He became active writing songs as part of the Cheyenne Guitar Society in Wyoming and finds inspiration in the camaraderie of the ACMA Singer Songwriter Circle on Sundays. Bill has never met a genre he didn’t like. Bill released his first CD in 2019\, and is working on his next one.\n\nClark Johnson\, from New York\, picked up bass in 7th grade and played in Blues bands all through college. As an adult he played mostly Rock/Folk.  Since moving to Florida\, Clark has played in bluegrass and country bands.

SUMMARY:Claudia Schmidt Sorry This show is canceled
DESCRIPTION:Claudia Schmidt is not well and had to cancel.. \nWe are doing a FREE show with the Smokey Daytona Band opening\, and a ACMA Open mic . \n  \n“If it were the intention of the creator or creators of this universe to perfectly blend together the night sky with moon and stars\, it might have been their intention as well to deliver Claudia Schmidt as their messenger of reminder. \nTo say that Schmidt is simply a performer with a talent to entertain would be a miscarriage of understatement. Schmidt takes her audiences into her world as easily as the child who discovers the endless universes that exist in a cardboard box. \nFrom lying on sandy beaches under an endless barrage of northern lights\, to the expected anguish and frustration of spinning tires on cars stuck deep in snow\, from the age-old struggle of change between adolescence and adulthood to the observation of sheer idiocy\, she leaves it to the imagination of her audience to conjure their own images of her storytelling and song. No interpretation of a Claudia Schmidt song or story is wrong-she invites audiences to tie their associations to her style. \nSchmidt weaves her way through her concert in much the same manner as a jester. Interwoven anecdotes\, revealing her past and present\, bring people to expect a relationship between themselves and memories driven deep with the passage of time. The concert is an endless display of self-realization through humor and longing\, leaving audience members yearning to become an integral part of her world. Having performed on stages across the country\, Schmidt has developed the ability to remain fresh. She enjoys her talent to entertain as much as the audience enjoys being entertained.”\n(Door County Advocate\, Wisconsin) \nwww.claudiaschmidt.com \nACMA members The Smokey Daytona Band Opens

SUMMARY:Max Hatt and Edda Glass in concert. Pete Bensen Opens
DESCRIPTION:We are happy to welcome Max Hatt and Edda Glass to our stage for the first time! Once again 6 Thumbs UP from the music committee!\n“A unique sound” — Larry Groce\, NPR Mountain Stage\n“Beautiful… #chills” —Ann Powers\, NPR Music\n“You cannot confuse her with any other artist” —New York Theatre Guide\n“An incomparable spook” —Nashville Scene\nMax Hatt / Edda Glass have “an incomparable spook” (Nashville Scene) and “a unique sound” (Larry Groce\, NPR)\, comprised of Glass’s unmistakable voice and Hatt’s lyrical guitar. Originally based in Montana\, their award-winning original music and unique interpretations of American and Brazilian standards have taken them all the way to New York City’s Lincoln Center\, DC’s Kennedy Center\, NPR Mountain Stage\, Sundance Film Fest and Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival. Praised for her “impeccable vocal command” (PopMatters) and compared to a gamut of singers from Astrud Gilberto to Billie Holiday\, Glass’s voice is ultimately “one of a kind…you cannot confuse her with another artist” (New York Theatre Guide). SUMMARY:Lipbone Redding in concert. Joe Virga opens
DESCRIPTION:Special event suggested donation $15/20. \nThe one and only Lipbone returns to our stage! He wowed us before and I believe he’ll do it again. “One man orchestra\, unplugged\, un expected” Here’s a bit more about Lipbone. \nIn his early twenties\, Lawrence “Lipbone” Redding migrated from North Carolina to New York City with his guitar. After a brief stint as an actor\, carpenter\, bartender and producer for the Museum of Sound Recording\, he promptly became a subway musician. \nFrom the swampy farmlands and beach towns of coastal North Carolina. Lipbone was steeped in the musical tradition of Soul\, Boogie and Blues. \nFrom 1998 to 2001 Lipbone honed his guitar and people skills amongst the underground caverns of New York City\, In 2002 his craft allowed him to travel and make a living wherever life took him: India\, Europe\, South America\, New Orleans\, San Francisco. Along the road\, he forged lifelong collaborative relationships with producers\, artists and masters around the globe. \nIn 2005 Lipbone Redding emerged into the vibrant East Village nightlife\, where he became a staple of the downtown music scene. From 2005-2012 he held a residency at the tiny but famous Jules Jazz Bistro on historic Saint Mark’s Place. Friday night and Sunday brunch with The Lipbone Orchestra became a regular happening frequented by hipsters and tourists alike. It was there amongst the champagne\, rowdy cabaret atmosphere and weekly packed house that Lipbone developed his signature jazzy Lip Trombone and unique style of musical storytelling. \nIn 2006\, In the East Village\, Lipbone met world famous producer Ahmet Ertegun\, founder of Atlantic Records (Ruth Brown\, Joe Turner\, The Clovers\, The Drifters\, The Coasters\, Ray Charles\, Ben E. King\, Solomon Burke\, Otis Redding\, Sam and Dave\, Percy Sledge\, Aretha Franklin\, Wilson Pickett\, Led Zeppelin). Ahmet\, on a date night with his lady\, motioned Lipbone to sit at his table. He offered his hand and confided “You play trombone with no trombone\, better than some trombone players that I know.” Lipbone took it as a blessing and hasn’t looked back since. \nIn 2007 Lipbone signed with Indie label\, Be-Pop Records\, founded by bass player and producer Jeff Eyrich (Natalie Cole\, Tanya Tucker\, T-Bone Burnett\, John Cale\, The Blasters\, The Plimsouls\, Dave’s True Story\, Cheech & Chong). 5 albums and a “Best Of” compilation have since been produced by Jeff and Be-Pop Records. It was also during this time that Lipbone teamed up with choreographer/dancer\, Bill T. Jones (Spring Awakening\, Fela!) to work on Chapel/Chapter. The live performance played to audiences worldwide and Lipbone\, along with the other collaborators\, won an OBIE award for Best Collaborative Performance. \nSince 2012\, in order to maintain a travel lifestyle 200 engagements per year\, Lipbone has returned to his roots and has sprouted new shoots. An uncanny vocal range\, a nylon string guitar\, a wooden spoon duct-taped to his foot and a lifetime of stories are all he needs to get the party started. \nLipbone Redding mostly tours as a solo act but collaborates regularly with other musicians and his trio\, The Lipbone Orchestra. He has shared the stage with many great artists including Marcia Ball\, John Mayall\, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band\, Tab Benoit\, Cyril Neville\, Jimmy Hall\, Jonathan Edwards\, Rita Wilson\, Shemekia Copeland\, Tommy Castro and others. \nLipbone has taken his singular vocal instrumental style to a new level by playing guitar and producing all of the instrument sounds while simultaneously singing and storytelling without the use of electronic effects nor a loop pedal. Really\, you should check him out. \nwww.lipbone.com

Americana music a coming together of blues\, roots\, folk and country. \nHouseboat Jim\, Elizabeth Lockhart\,  Ross Jordan \nRoss Jordan has been writing songs since he picked up a guitar at age 10. He went on to study music and classical guitar at Rutgers University. His songs reflect the regional influences from all of the parts of the country that he has lived from New Jersey to the West Coast o the Mid-West and now Southwest Florida\, His songs feature catchy tunes and lyrics and audience members can often be seen dancing and swaying and singing along while he performs. www.reverbnation.com/rossjordan \nHouseboat Jim\, played neighborhood bars and restaurants in 1957 and ’58 and then started playing in the Village\nuntil I moved to Texas in ’65. I quit playing in public for several years and started up again in Las Vegas.\nMet some good pickers there and played for about seven years. I retired and moved to Florida and started\nplaying and hosting open mics about eight years ago. I cut a CD two years ago and I’m playing around town\nregularly now. No plans of stopping. \nElizabeth Lockhart\n“Truly an original Elizabeth Lockhart’s eclectic\, life-long journey through music informs her distinctive blend of traditional folk with elements of classical\, world and blues music. Her sound combines soulful vocals\, an intricate finger picking guitar style and detailed storytelling that culminates into unique original compositions\, drawing listeners in even further through evocative and powerful narratives. There are simply no other musicians on the Southwest Florida scene delivering Lockhart’s style of music to audiences…”\nJohn Davis talk show host\, producer\, cellist Morning Edition NPR WGCU \nFor as long as she can remember\, music has been an integral part of Elizabeth Reece Lockhart’s life. When she was just\nsix years old\, her voice brought chills to audiences during solo performances as she delivered gospel music with a rich\, full vocal range. While in school\, she won numerous awards in state-wide vocal competitions. She was selected to open for Reba McEntire at age 12. Later\, she chose Opera Performance at North Carolina School of the Arts\, reaching the professional status of opera singer with the Inspiration Point Fine Arts Colony Opera Theatre and the Piedmont Opera. \nElizabeth spent most of her early career teaching and performing classical music\, theatre and art song literature. But it was when she found folk/roots music that she was inspired to develop her self-taught guitar and writing style. Reminiscent of 60’s folk revival women icons such as Joan Baez\, Judy Collins\, and Joanie Mitchell\, Elizabeth Lockhart delivers this type of quality performance. She has the ability to tug at a listener’s heart strings through melodies\, stories and rich vocals that connect a listener to an authentic\, feeling place within oneself. \n“Her music always communicates. Her voice connects. It is contemporary\, and it is deeply honest.”\nCynthia Arnold – president and CEO ‘One Earth United’ \nMs. Lockhart just released her debut folk album Master Key this year. The Oklahoma-born singer/songwriter co-produced with Chris Rosser who also engineered the album along with guest performances by highly acclaimed folk/Americana and world music players\, including April Verch\, Chuck Brodsky\, Chris Rosser\, Isabel Castellvi\, Billy Cardine\, and River Guerguerian. \nMaster Key is a twelve-song collection of smooth\, hear-felt tracks that gently draw the listener in\, leading them on a poetic journey\, from the soothing piano sounds of ‘’Lifer’ to the more dramatic and descriptive narrative and cello swells on ‘Widows Walk.’ Lockhart combines hundreds of years old traditional ballads with her original\, contemporary folk compositions. Weaving together elements of classical\, folk\, world -pop and blues\, Master Key delivers timeless orchestration\, haunting stories and melodies with something special that appeals to a multi-genre\, worldwide audience. \nHave a listen to her work as an artist\, musician and songwriter on Spotify\, Apple Music or your favorite music platform. In addition to being a fixture in Nashville studios for 48 years\, he also has his own recording career going full tilt. (He has recorded 35 solo albums.) He served as the music director for eightteen years for the syndicated television series\, “Hee Haw”. \nCharlie McCoy began working sessions in the early 60s\, one of the first being “Candy Man” by Roy Orbison. “Forty nine dollars”\, says Charlie. That’s how much I was paid for that session back in 1961. “It got Roy another hit and me a career. For a twenty year old to make $49 for three hours work back then\, it was a dream. \nShortly after the release of “Candy Man”\, Charlie became one of the in-demand session players in Nashville. His session credits are literally a who’s who of country music. For a fifteen year stretch\, he did more than 400 sessions a year. A grand total would number more than 12\,000. (and he’s still going) In the last twenty years\, he has been touring more with many appearances in Europe and Japan. \nIn addition to country sessions\, Charlie was a mainstay on Elvis Presley recordings both in Nashville and Los Angeles. When Bob Dylan recorded “Highway 61”\, “Blond On Blond”\, “John Wesley Harding”\, and “Nashville Skyline”\, Charlie was there\, playing on these land-mark recordings. Playfully dubbed “Blue-Twangled Folk ‘n’ Roll” in a 2014 No Depression interview\, Schneider & Mayfield have brought their musical blend of the gritty\, fun\, soulful and sweet to delighted audiences across the USA and abroad\, exploring and expanding their musical horizons with every performance.\nFrom ballads and dirges to grooves and hollerin’ rockers\, from intimate concerts and clubs to festival stages\, this multitalented duo clocks up thousands of miles annually from their home base in Fort Myers\, Florida\, toting an ever-evolving array of instruments wherever they are needed. With Schneider on guitar (or dobro\, mandolin or banjo)\, harmonica\, kick drum and vocals\, Mayfield on mandolin (or guitar\, ukulele or percussion) and vocals\, their sound does not suffer for lack of bandmates. Schneider & Mayfield are excited to release their long-anticipated first official Duo album later in 2018\, Reckless Saints. It will be the first to feature original compositions by Mayfield and includes some wonderful guest artists. Schneider’s early and current works can be heard on Pandora\, Spotify\, iTunes/Apple Music\, etc. in addition to public and college radio stations everywhere.\nSchneider’s songs have earned praise in the Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Competition (TX)\, Telluride Blues & Brews Acoustic Blues competition (CO)\, and Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artist showcase (NY). During the ‘80s\, Billy followed his heart and went to Nashville. While based in Music City\, he toured internationally with Tommy Overstreet\, Terri Gibbs and Bandana. In town\, he performed on the Grand Ole Opry with Jeanne Pruett. \nBilly returned to Maryland in 1988 and released one album with the reformed Paradise Rockers before landing the spot as lead guitarist for renegade rock-n-roller Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers living the rock-star lifestyle. He composed and recorded music for Maryland Public Television and produced numerous CDs for regional artists in the Baltimore/DC area. \nHe also recorded and released two CDs on his own label\, Willbilly Records. In 2000 Billy formed a new roots-rock ensemble\, Willbilly—his nickname in high school because of his love for country\, folk and blues music. He also expanded his role as a producer and studio-owner\, establishing a successful recording facility in rural Maryland. \nFrom 2006-2016 Kemp wrote\, recorded and performed with the critically acclaimed\, Appalachian Folk duo\, Jeni & Billy. \nBilly released a new solo CD\, Another Life in August of 2017. \nIn 2018\, Billy released The Painter’s Bucket\, a collection of previously released and unreleased songs from 1983-2018. \nHis concerts include songs from his latest releases\, as well as selections from a rich and extensive back-catalogue. From Lone Star country to urban shuffles and Appalachian waltzes\, Billy remains a songwriter with a love of story.\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDIcMb0fiwc&feature=youtu.be\nwww.billykemp.com \nOpening musician Bill got his first guitar in 1963 — the 60’s may have left him\, but he never really left the 60’s. As young people do\, he bounced around from school to army to nowheresville —\nSomewhere along the line he picked up a “Travis” style for the right hand. He never performed or wrote songs. He worked for a resorts company in Ft. Lauderdale\, finally retired to Ft. Myers and discovered ACMA and the songwriters circle.\nThat is why you see him here today.\nTotally a product of ACMA!

SUMMARY:Kyshona in concert. Special guest Shannon Labrie opens. Friday Show
DESCRIPTION:Kyshona Armstrong has been called upon to represent for soul and gospel in roots\, rock and folk lineups and to bring singer-songwriter sensibilities to R&B bills. But wherever she plants her feet\, she does so with righteous conviction and a strong sense of her own voice.”- NPR Music \nWith a rousing and unanimous YES…the ACMA music committee ensured Kyshona a place on our stage! Read on for more about Kyshona. \nFor a singer-songwriter\, there’s no more basic function than getting onstage and getting something personal off your chest. The therapeutic qualities of the experience have seduced countless confessional composers\, some of whom make known that they hold unfiltered expression as their highest artistic aim. \nKyshona Armstrong started out enabling others to enjoy the healing properties of songwriting\, and keeping her thoughts to herself. When you’re a music therapist to incarcerated and institutionalized adults and school children with emotional behavior disorders\, artistic considerations aren’t even on the table. \n“I definitely had to accept the fact that when I’m writing with a patient\, whatever they want to do is what they want to do\,” Armstrong tells the Scene as she nurses a latte in East Nashville. “It’s their song: ‘Even if it might not fit in a form\, if that’s what you want to say\, say it. We’re not writing a big hit. This is for you.’ ” \nWhen Armstrong worked first in the state mental hospital\, then the public school system in Georgia\, she found that her co-writers often clung to chant-like\, circular song ideas. “They would find this melody they liked and they would stick to it\,” she explains. “It was theirs to keep. It wasn’t hard to hold onto.” \nArmstrong had focused on oboe at the University of Georgia — that and steel drums\, which she played in the college’s Hawaiian-shirt-sporting ensemble\, Tropical Breeze. But since neither instrument was all that well suited to coaxing patients into musical self-expression\, she got into singing\, playing acoustic guitar and songwriting. \nWhen describing the positions she held during her decade or so in the mental health field\, she punctuates each chapter with the same phrase: “That got kinda heavy.” The weight of it was what eventually moved her to begin penning her own tunes. \n“A lot of my first songs were dealing with what I saw my patients struggling with\,” she recalls. “A lot of my songs were about the stories that I would hear from them. Because I can only take on so much of people dumping. So I had to get rid of it and shed it somehow. I think telling their stories was one way for me to go out in the world and be like\, ‘There’s so much more happening out there.’ For me\, that was therapeutic. I don’t like to talk about myself\, but I’ll talk about everybody else if you want me to share a story.” \nAt a certain point\, her emotional investment in her patients’ pain became too much to purge at coffeehouse open mics. “You’ve gotta know when to tap out\,” she says. “I was like\, ‘I’m not of any use to these kids if I can’t give myself as fully as I used to.’ ” \nSo Armstrong got on the college singer-songwriter circuit\, blending skills of empathizing and entertaining. Her set lists might put a strummy version of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” next to “Confined\,” a song she’d written with a couple of 20-somethings in the mental hospital. They were the hip-hop heads in the patients’ band — otherwise made up of Elvis-obsessed middle-aged men — and they’d wanted a song in the group repertoire that spoke to their own experience. \nBesides teaching institutionalized adults and emotionally troubled school kids how to have healthy interactions with instruments in hand\, Armstrong served a similar mission on the board of the Southern Girls Rock Camp in Athens\, Ga. And that made her a shoo-in to volunteer at last summer’s Tennessee Teens Rock Camp\, where she met a bunch of the women with whom she’ll perform at the girl group tribute She’s a Rebel a few days after playing her own show at 12th & Porter. \nArmstrong moved to Nashville in January 2014\, spending the first couple months commuting back to Athens to record her album Go\, but easily made friends and landed bookings in local folk singer-songwriter\, pop and soul scenes once she was around more. Smack-dab in the middle ofGo is a song that distills the insights of her therapeutic work and the artistic aspirations she’s developed since. Called “Cornelius Dupree\,” it’s the turbulent channeling of a black man’s real-life experience serving 30 years in Texas for rape and robbery before being exonerated. Rather than narrate the external details of Dupree’s story\, Armstrong gives voice to the searing physical and emotional strain he must’ve felt having to defend his innocence for so long. \n“That one took me a long time\,” she says of the song\, “because I wanted to do it right. I tried it from the outside looking in. But in the end I was like\, ‘I have to put myself in those shoes.’ ” \nShe adds\, “The injustice that Cornelius suffered\, on a much smaller level I have experienced that myself\, just being a black woman living in the South. I’ve been held by the police before for nothing\, and it’s frustrating. I’ve never been imprisoned\, but I’ve been held aside. I remember the injustice I felt and the anger I felt. But I’ve always been taught I have to be extra kind\, extra polite to compensate. …With his story\, I think I just got fed up.” \nAt college shows\, Armstrong urges students to look up Dupree’s story on their phones — and hopefully expand their awareness of human suffering — even as she’s singing her song. “Cornelius Dupree” had a similarly awakening effect when she performed it at a house concert 20 minutes outside of Ferguson\, Mo. She’d driven up strictly to join the protests after Michael Brown’s shooting\, but accepted a friend’s invitation to a combination concert and cookout in the suburbs one evening. Folks there seemed downright oblivious to the neighboring turmoil. At the end of the night\, the host thanked her for getting their attention. \nArmstrong has reached the point where she embraces repetitive internal rhythms that emerge in some of her songwriting — likening them to both gospel spirituals and the viscerally simplistic utterances of her former patients — and she’s delivering her roots-soul originals with articulate warmth and newly claimed authority. \nwww.kyshona.com \nKyshona has been touring with Shannon Labrie who acts as her opening musician. www. shannonlabriee.com

SUMMARY:Malcolm Holcombe in concert. Roy Schneider opens.
DESCRIPTION:On the North Carolina side of the Southern Appalachians\, the land still retains its secrets.\nIt’s a place of paradoxes\, where poverty is handed down from one hardscrabble generation to the next in towns passed over by the New South progress that gives a city like Asheville its bourgeois charm. It’s a resilient pocket of wilderness where a small band of Cherokee once disappeared into the misty hollers to wait out the white man’s ire\, back in the deep woods where old growth timber blocks out the sunlight and compass needles sometimes spin crazily and the trappings of civilization give way to things beyond human understanding.\nOn the cusp of releasing his 13th studio album — “Come Hell or High Water\,” out XXX on Singular Recordings — singer-songwriter Malcolm Holcombe is a both a part of and apart from those Blue Ridge hills\, a Southern folk golem brought to life by the deeper mysteries that give these hills so much of their folklore.\nHis songs belong in the same Western North Carolina echelon of mysteries like the Brown Mountain Lights or the ghostly apparitions along Helen’s Bridge or the phantom choir of Roan Mountain — things that surpass conventional explanation but summon forth a combination of awe and primal longing\, an ache to understand the great questions of the human condition.\n“Malcolm Holcombe is an artist of deep mystery and high art; he is who I listen to\, and have for over 20 years\,” says Darrell Scott\, one of Nashville’s premier sessions instrumentalists and a nationally respected singer-songwriter. “All the goods that I value in songs and artistry are in Malcolm.”\n“I think for most songwriters\, songs are like clothing. Malcolm’s songs are his skin\,” writes fellow Nashville tunesmith David Olney. “They are a direct expression of who is as a man.”\n“People like to say Malcolm Holcombe is a national treasure\, and they got that right\,” adds R.B. Morris\, an East Tennessee singer-songwriter\, playwright and the former poet laureate of the City of Knoxville. “He stands on all the old American music traditions and takes them his own way into a very individual music expression.”\nwww.malcolmbholcolmbe.com \nSPECIAL EVENT PRICING 15/20 \nOpening for Malcolm is another true Americana original\, Roy Schneider. Troubadour and formerly syndicated cartoonist Roy Schneider has developed a devoted fan base for his flavor of Americana music since 2008\, through international radio airplay and consistent touring with life-and-stage partner Kim Mayfield. DESCRIPTION:The ACMA is pleased to welcome back Roy Schneider and Kim Mayfield to open our 2020 music season. There’s a special story behind the connection with them and the ACMA. Just ask us! Beyond that they always bring a wonderful vibe and special music to our stage. Here’s a bit about the duo:\nTroubadour and formerly syndicated cartoonist Roy Schneider has developed a devoted fan base for his flavor of Americana music since 2008\, through international radio airplay and consistent touring with life-and-stage partner Kim Mayfield. Just ask them! Here’s a bit about the band.\nThe band is comprised of Bob Williams\, Mike McMllan\, Bill Veach and Clark Johnson. This band is made up of all ACMA members. They perform regularly on Fort Myers Beach.\nBob Williams: In the late sixties\, Bob Williams\, a young guitar player from Long Island\, NY\, began writing his own music. Pulling elements from Folk-Rock and Country-Rock\, Bob created a sound all of his own. Always eager to share amusing stories behind the lyrics\, Bob’s songs are personal. Irreverent. Funny. Sad. And most importantly\, true to his heart. With encouragement from family and friends\, he produced and released his first CD No Apologies in 2015. In 2018 he released his second Album\, Ain’t Sorry Yet.\nMike McMillan: Started playing guitar at age 13. He enjoys many different genres which has also influenced his original compositions. Keith has been both a band leader and a sideman and enjoys backing others on guitar and vocals when the opportunity presents itself. Keith also has a passion for writing\, co-writing\, arranging\, recording and performing original music.\nBill Veach was a drummer in a rock band in college\, but guitars are easier to move and make for better neighbors so he spent $100 of his precious college beer money on a flame red acoustic guitar. Moving was a part of his life for years\, with a love of travel that is expressed in many of his songs. His songs are often autobiographical\, about his experiences\, travel\, love\, loss and some characters he has met on his journey. The duo has performed\nofficial showcases at Folk Alliance conferences in New York\, Austin TX and\nAsheville NC. Kim was a semi-finalist in the 2019 International Songwriting Competition. \nBill Metts started playing guitar during the Country Blues revival of the 60s and fell in love with the art of finger-style guitar. He began his writing career after moving to South West Florida and regularly attending open mics in Fort Myers\, notably the (sadly) no longer operating “Nita’s Sweet Bean Café” where many local singer songwriters cut their teeth. Shortly after\, he was asked to served on the board of the nationally known Americana Community Music Association and hosted their weekly Songwriter Circle for four years. He has also\, for seven years through a not for profit organization called Hope by Song\, been composing songs from the writings of people dealing with great emotional trauma in order to help them heal through the power inherent in music. He has performed at the prestigious Mississippi John Hurt Blues Festival\, the world famous “Ground Zero” in Clarksdale Mississippi and twice at the Island Hopper Festival Songwriter Fest. He has also opened for such greats as award winners Doug MacCleod and Jon Shain\, and is scheduled to open for the legendary Roy Bookbinder.\nwww.mettsmusic.com

SUMMARY:Aaron Burdett in concert. Ken Crosby opens
DESCRIPTION:Creating music isn’t a means to an end\, it is an end with a meaning for Aaron Burdett. Writing and creating songs is rooted somewhere deep in his psyche; it’s something that can’t be denied and must be shared. His lyrics are soul-touching\, intelligent\, witty\, and poetic all at once\, while his music style is a seamless blend of Americana\, country\, blues\, bluegrass\, and folk-rock that cohesively creates a story. \nAaron is listed as one of the top 10 most important musicians of western North Carolina by WNC Magazine\, alongside such greats as Doc Watson\, Steep Canyon Rangers\, and The Avett Brothers. He has also receivedcritical acclaim as a songwriter\, winning Our State Magazine’s Carolina Songs competition in 2012 with “Going Home to Carolina.” Aaron’s song “Magpie” won third place bluegrass song in the prestigious Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at Merlefest in 2013. Over the years Aaron has been a finalist in numerous other songwriting competitions\, including The Mountain Stage Songwriting Contest\, The NC Songwriter’s Cooperative Songwriting Contest\, and the Hank Williams Songwriting Contest. \nAaron’s writing is as prolific and genuine as the man. He grew up the oldest of three boys in the fairly isolated small town in Saluda\, NC\, where the Blue Ridge meets the Smoky Mountains. When Aaron was about 10 years old he was introduced to the music of Cat Stevens\, the first of many musical influences that include the Grateful Dead\, Led Zeppelin\, Doc Watson\, Tony Rice\, Norman Blake\, and David Grier. \nDuring his teen years\, Aaron found his tenor voice in a choral setting and\, performed in musical theater. In 1992 he went to the prestigious Governor’s School of North Carolina for choral music. In his 20s\, he played extensively in Boone\, NC and owned a music store that sold instruments and offered lessons. \nNo stranger to hard work\, Aaron’s sense of adventure took him across the country working on various types of farms and ranches. While many mainstream country singers pay lip-service to the blue-collar working world\, Aaron’s songs come from his life experiences. \nAfter seeing a lot of his friends and musical colleagues struggle to be full-time musicians\, sometimes at the cost of their marriages and family lives\, Aaron moved back to his hometown and decided to go another route. He started a construction business\, built a home for himself and his wife\, and started a family\, all while continuing to write songs and playing music\, recording an album every year or two. In2013\, Aaron decided to pursue music full time\, so fast forward to 2017\, and his distinctive clear voice has carried his dream into a successful career. Aaron’s songs effortlessly transition from solo performance to full band\, with equal emotional impact on audiences. \nAaron has 7 albums\, Refuge (2017 on Organic Records)\, Tinderbox (2015 on Organic records)\, Fruits of My Labor (2014 on Organic Records)\, Breathing Underwater (2012)\, Stand Up Eight (2010)\, Resolve (2008) \, and The Weight of Words (2005).\nwww.aaronburdett.com \n

SUMMARY:Bill Mize in concert. Danny Anderson Opens
DESCRIPTION:“It was the mid-1950s when I first saw Elvis on TV. Although I was only three or four years old\, I realized I had just witnessed something incredibly powerful\, and for me music was what it was going to be all about.” \n***************************\nGrammy-winning guitarist Bill Mize is a son of Tennessee\, and a fitting representative of his state’s rich musical heritage. His critically lauded fingerstyle compositions are fluid and intricate\, and their delivery masterful. One suspects an influential teacher\, and one would be right. “I received most of my musical education from a cheap Zenith radio\,” says Mize\, who as a child drifted off to sleep to the decidedly non-sleepy lullabyes emanating from Nashville’s WLAC and WSM and Knoxville’s WNOX. \nMaybe that’s why critics speak of his ability to “transport” the listener; the music itself has been transported. The links to his Tennessee roots are unmistakable\, but so are the elements of the far wider musical realm he inhabits\, and the mixture is as intoxicating as Tennessee moonshine. With a twist. \n*************************** \nBill is a past winner of the National Fingerstyle Guitar Competition at The Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield\, Kansas. Guitar Player Magazine has labeled this event the “U.S. Open of guitar competitions.” Bill received a GRAMMY Award for his collaboration with musician and storyteller David Holt on the recording Stellaluna\, and has been featured on the popular guitar compilations “Windham Hill Guitar Sampler” by Windham Hill Records and “Masters of the Acoustic Guitar” by Narada Records. In 2009\, Bill’s music appeared in the Ken Burns documentary “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.” Mel Bay Productions transcribed Mize’s second CD\, “Tender Explorations\,” into a songbook\, and his original compositions have been transcribed for Fingerstyle Guitar and Acoustic Guitar magazines.\nwww.billmize.com \nNew \nACMA member Danny Anderson Opens
