DESCRIPTION:Critically acclaimed\, award winning vocalist\, guitarist and composer\, Woody Russell\, has released a body of recorded work that spans from the folk-rock infused songwriter fare of his first album\, …As Simple As That (1996) to the more recent and highly praised blues/soul release of Up Against It (2010) and the pop-jazz shades of Delicious Days (2013). A year in the making\, his newest full length album\, Russell’s latest\, Carry It Up\, delivers more jazz shaded compositions that orbits around themes of love\, compassion\, tolerance\, respect and the quest for all of the aforementioned. Again\, his jazz-adjacent songwriting is present throughout as the band turns in one exceptional performance after another. Mainstays from previous WR lineups include bassist extraordinaire\, Brady Muckelroy and harmonica ace\, Jose Ruiz. Newer additions\, Lloyd Wright (piano\, keys)\, Derrick Hicks (piano)\, Tony Miller (drums) and special guest vocalist\, Jacqui Walker\, shine through with inspired performances. The recording is brimming with excellent solos and ensemble interplay. But\, what elevates the game\, yet again\, is Russell’s very fine delivery as a vocalist: equal parts crooner and soul-shouter. There can be no doubt that he possesses a mastery of his vocal instrument which conveys an emotional sincerity with each phrase\, each lyrical turn. He navigates the sound of his words with a rhythmic precision and melodic expression akin to jazz improvisation. Then there’s his guitar playing\, which Blues Revue likened to “the fearlessness of Jeff Beck”. \nRussell has always been a genre-blurring artist and the release of Carry It Up is no exception to that rule. As a poet\, a storyteller\, he digs deep in to intimate narratives and is equally comfortable addressing a broader social consciousness. An amalgam of contemporary jazz and classic R&B buzzes at the core of Carry It Up\, shaded by a hint of rock and soul. His sophisticated compositions are supported by lyrics that mine the heart of the spiritual\, the romantic and the soul-searcher as they orbit around themes of love\, compassion\, respect and the pursuit of each of the aforementioned. He has also\, for the first time\, recorded a cover song; a sincere acoustic take of Marvin Gaye’s chestnut “What’s Going On” that focuses on the poignant message of a timeless lyric. It features the tenor sax of Chi-town transplant\, Dez Desormeaux\, and is right at home amid the rest of this original work. The end result with Carry It Up is a lush recording that is positively brimming with superb song craft\, gutsy pop-jazz and soul\, created\nWoody takes to the road throughout the U.S frequently. His live performances\, whether solo or with his full band\, have been described as “transcendent” by KDRP radio personality\, David Arnsberger; engaging audiences through a sincere and “in the moment” connection to his music. Great original acoustic music and the stories behind the songs in an intimate Songwriters Showcase \n Mike McMillan got his first guitar as a teenager and has been pursuing his musical dreams ever since (in between jobs\, 4 kids and several dogs). After his first Doc Watson concert in the 1970’s\, he was inspired to learn finger picking and then later\, many blues songs. Mike can be found performing regularly on Fort Myers Beach. \nMillie Van Horn Has entertained at different venues for the past 15 years since retiring to Florida. She is self-taught piano and guitar and playing piano by ear since the age of 3. Millie has written many poems and is now composing them into original songs. She is also an author her children’s book “The Adventures of Knobby and Maddie Duck” can be downloaded and purchased at Amazon.com…..a story of the beautiful Muscovy Ducks that inhabit Florida and their adventures around Little Lake. \n Melissa Welke has been singing and writing songs for several years. Performing at such venues as Blissfest Music Festival\, Mackinaw City Outdoor Amphitheater\, Boyne City Strolling the Streets\, Harbor Springs Street Musique\, Charlevoix Area Library Folk Music Series\, Alliance of the Arts Farmers Market and numerous other private gigs she aims to project a positive attitude in her music.\nWhile wintering in Florida she found the ACMA\, and has performed at many shows. Melissa always leaves the listener walking away feeling inspired.

A versatile guitarist’s guitarist\, he plays it all with a flourish of artistry and melodic inspiration. Pat entertains fans with intricate fingerpicking\, easy wit\, and nimble interpretations of old blues\, swing\, R&B and original tunes. Chet Atkins called Pat one of the greatest finger pickers in the world today; Leo Kottke called his playing “haunting.”\nPat is certainly one of the most listened to finger pickers in the world. As the guitarist for the Guys All-Star Shoe Band of Minnesota Public Radio’s A Prairie Home Companion\, Pat got to show off his savvy licks and distinctive original songs to millions of listeners each week. His background as a drummer in a garage rock band helped with the transition and he never looked back. SUMMARY:The Rough and Tumble! Terry Lynn Melody opens
DESCRIPTION:…used to say they were from Nashville\, TN. That was before April 2015 when 5 year members Mallory Graham and Scott Tyler quit their day jobs\, sold everything they owned\, and gave their thirty day notice on their rental house to trade in for a life permanently on the road. With their sixteen foot camper and their 88 pound dog\, Butter\, they have been touring nationwide. Don’t let their vagabond tendencies fool you– this americana-folk duo are a compact team of close harmonies\, versatile instrumentation\, and deliberate songwriting all presented with a nudge of the elbow and a tongue in the cheek. Haunting\, quirky\, solemn\, and spritely\, The Rough & Tumble are for the faint of heart and the strong of will.\n\nIn 2011\, the friends-turned-bandmates released their first EP\, We Sing in Your House When You’re Not There… we even ordered pizza.\, an exploration of watching other people’s dogs while eating other people’s food. Shortly after\, the duo released their second EP\, We Don’t Believe in Monsters\, Anymore… but will you please check under our beds?\, wherein the band discovered that they did\, in fact\, still believe in monsters. In 2012\, their third EP\, For You\, Now That You’re Married… and for me\, too.\, generated a sudden foreshadowing for the band\, still noted in history books as the time they knew everything they didn’t know. \n2013 proved to be a small miracle as The Rough & Tumble met their deadlines and wrote\, recorded\, and released two songs a month every month. The result was The Rough & Tumble’s Holiday Awareness Campaign\, a project that fought for the underprivileged\, uncelebrated holidays in the calendar year. While having fun with days like Meteor Day and Boxing Day\, The R&T additionally observed the great sadness that can accompany great celebration with A Day for the Remembrance of the Souls of Lost Whales and Evaluate Your Life Day. \nIn 2014\, filmmaker friend Alyssa Pearson asked the duo to create a soundtrack for her upcoming film\, Pieces and Pieces. Up for the challenge\, the songwriters took on the task\, tackling issues of PTSD\, women’s rights\, war\, and the love in between. While the film is still to be released\, The Rough & Tumble released the seven songs\, dually named Pieces and Pieces\, on March 1\, 2016. \nAs they closed out their second year as full time road musicians\, The Rough & Tumble managed to squeeze a fourth companion into their 16 foot camper– an 81 pound rescue pup named Pud. They made room for a few more songs\, too\, as they released Cardboard and Christmas Lights in February 2017\, a 7-song EP compiling the earliest and latest years of their career\, creating a song-by-song education of the less studied R&T fans\, while adding a few new songs for the devout. \nThe Rough & Tumble announced that a new record is due in January 2018\, titled We Made Ourselves a Home When We Didn’t Know. The full length record was recorded over their 2017 winter with Dave Coleman in East Nashville. More details will follow with a few music videos to accompany. But for now\, likely\, any minute now\, they will be in a town near you\, singing sad songs and telling bad jokes until the next town calls them. \nACMA member Terry Lynn Melody opens the show: \nTerryLynn Melody began her musical performance career as a child in her hometown of New Bern\, NC. Her mother\, a NY Performing Arts graduate and professional singer was her role model and teacher. Later in life\, guided by a need to find her voice an an artist\, she began exploring songwriting as a means to tell her story. The resulting songs are an ever growing catalog of original material. This year she took the leap to put some of those songs on record and August 1st 2016 she released her self produced debut CD “Counting Daydreams” Nashville hall of fame great Charlie McCoy appears on several the tracks as does 2014 NZCMA Male Artist of the Year Phil Doublet. The album spans country\, blues\, folk and pop and is an eclectic collection of some of her favorite songs from the past 15 years of writing. \nGrammy Winning Songwriter Otha Young said “TerryLynn shows a tremendous innate understanding of the essence of compelling song writing.
